My Story

Our founder, Michi, is a Japanese native, born in the modern metropolis of Osaka. Her mother recalls that she was always a dreamer, finding inspiration from the world around her. At just 7 years old, Michi fell deeply in love with dance after attending a magnificent rendition of Swan Lake with her mother. Upon expressing her dream to become a ballerina, her mother cautioned her to be more realistic about her ambitions and warned her that dreams very rarely come true. Michi was devastated and laid her dream of dancing to rest to pursue a more practical career path as she grew up.

In the mid-90s, Michi moved to the iconic city of Los Angeles and soon married the love of her life who was, himself, an avid dreamer. Once again, she saw herself pushing her dreams to the side-lines to support his ambitions. In a terrible twist of fate, Michi found that her husband had betrayed her despite her efforts, and she was left feeling empty and alone. These feelings were reminiscent of the heartbreak she had felt when she was just 7 years old, having left her dreams of dance behind.

She spent time mourning the life she had never had the opportunity to live until, one fortuitous day, she heard a guiding voice whisper to her – “Dance!”

That night, she took her first salsa class and felt genuine joy and healing for the first time. She made the commitment to finally pursue the life that she was always meant to live and underwent intensive dance training under renowned Salsa, Bachata, Argentine Tango, International Rumba and Cha Cha instructors. She became certified by the International Dance Association and took the decision to open her own tango company where she could give the gift of dance to others. What had been the most traumatic and terrifying incident in her life had turned into the gift of hope and re-birth that she had so desperately needed to reach her full potential. Today, she attributes her soulful connection to her emotions, spirituality and sensuality to the art of dance, having come to the realization that the same little girl who fell in love with dance at 7 years old continues to live on in her passion for the Tango.

Michi now works to inspire others to find connection, motivation and freedom by joining her dance community at Tango Connection. Here, she shares the magic that the Tango offers with each person who walks through her doors, gifting every visitor with the ability to experience the delight, comfort and unbridled passion that the Tango offers. In a world that is often characterized by division, Michi strives to create a safe, loving and non-judgemental space where people from a wide range of backgrounds can connect through Tango and become one with others and the world around them.
